SCAPA FLOW - Reel/Rant

Lucky for me, our New Years is in the Autumn, and we don't celebrate 31st December. So, Sunday, the 1st of January is an ordinary work day here. Not being hungover, I wrote a reel. It is hot off the press, not neccessarily "done," and I invite musical critique. I hasten to add that three Low A's in ...

Great picture--great waistbelt leatherwork, too.

Can you tell us more about Highland piping and Highland Games in Russia? We don't hear much about piping in your part of the world.

Thanks,
-David.

Melodically, I can't fault this tune at all. If Dunblane and Cullen Bay had a child, this would be it. Unquestionably, this would sound beautiful with a strong, simple harmony. Regarding similarities to other tunes, well, I tend to look at it this way: It clearly isn't a duplicate of any preexisting...

JEDBURGH ABBEY

About thirty years Ago I took a trip on the Humber Scot bus line from Leeds to Edinburgh. After coming out of the mist in the hills of the boderlands, we stopped for a bit in Jedburgh. This was on a Sunday morning, so I had the town to myself. I walked toward the Abbey as if I had a destination, tho...

Well I like it just fine! It has got quite a nice swing to it. It works nicely slightly up-tempo as a hornpipe, too.

My compliments to the chef.

From Egypt -- Pyramid Pipers

My mother spent a day ballooning over the pyramids in Egypt recently, and found a pipe band most curiously dressed back at the hotel that evening.

Hi Stu, I have paired this tune up with my Night Train to Lydda recently posted here. I like to play your tune first, then go into mine. But either way can be good. See what you might think. I hope Burnin' becomes a classic someday. Write something that hangs around on the low G, B, D, high G. Thank...

The Israel Pipes & Drums

We have been in existence one year, and have just played our first performance (US Marine Birthday Ball for the US Embassy here).

Raggle taggle, but hey it is a start!

NIGHT TRAIN TO LYDDA Hornpipe

Lydda = Lidd-dah Named for the new train service to the main international airport east of Tel Aviv, which picks up near the Lebanese border in the north, and travels all the into the new train station right inside the airport terminal building. This tune goes great with Stu Higgin's Burnin' Down th...

This tune is structured nicely, with nice attention to variation. There is no doubt that it would sound pleasant on a nice pipe. Being a 4/4, with 4 parts, I would recommend harmony/partial harmony for the repeats. I would also be wary of playing this too slowly. (Small point: You've got an F in the...

FALLS OF CLYDE THE SHIP Hornpipe

This was composed for a Caledonian Society of Hawai'i event which took place on the the Scottish-built clipper Falls of Clyde . There is a non-bagpipe Falls of Clyde tune or medley, named after the falls of the same name, but I didn't know that at that time. I never did play the tune at the event. I...

Not half-bad! I rather enjoyed this tune. A few judicious ties give us pause for thought, as it were.

So send the really exotic 5th and 6th parts after the weekend.

Almost all of the technique in this tune derives from the speed at which it needs to be played for the bottom hand melody to come out. Its not so bad if you play it slowly to get used to the notes, then speed up only gradually. It seems a lot more difficult than it really is. It is part of a style I...

TIM GELLAITRY HIGHLAND PIPES (4-pt. 2/4 March)

Named for a friend who makes great pipes, and who was working as a pipe-maker with Wm Sinclair & Son when my Sinclairs were made. By coincidence, he once spent some months as a kibbutz volunteer not too far away from where I live now in central Galilee, but before I knew him. This march is for those...

Sounds like a great band tune. Bounces nicely at the tempo you have selected, too. Should get the kilts swinging.
